Tom Jones at Ponty Park Review
20/06/2005
It was 1964 when Tom Jones last played in Pontypridd. 41 years on, Tom played his homecoming gig to a 25,000 strong crowd in Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd.
With the party atmosphere in full swing from the offset, Tom's 65th birthday promised to be a great day. Welsh acts such as Along Came Man, Tesni Jones, and the Storys warmed up the crowd to raptuous applause.
At 9pm a short nostalgic look back at Tom's Pontypridd memories welcomed him to the stage. Kitted out in a striking purple suit and black shirt, Tom wasted no time in whipping the crowd into a singalong frenzy. Bashing out classics such as 'Delilah' and 'Green Green Grass of Home,' made sure there wasn't a dry eye in the valleys that night.
'The Voice' looked visibly moved upon receiving a birthday surprise in the shape of rising opera star Katherine Jenkins. She sang Myfanwy before joining the crowd in singing a Happy Birthday that could be heard ringing around Wales.
At the end of the night Tom left the stage to thunderous applause and a massive firework display worthy of Independance Day. May 28th was a day that Tom Jones and anyone in Ynysangharad Park that day will never forget.
