The Full Ponty
With 10,000 music fans descending on Pontypridd's Ynysangharad Park for a weekend of rock fun, The Full Ponty, one of the biggest music events outside Wales' major cities for years, was an event people will be talking about for some time.
Heading up the main tent on Saturday night were Welsh rock royalty Feeder, Goldie Lookin Chain and The Automatic, followed on Sunday night by metal gods Funeral for a Friend, Biffy Clyro and Fightstar. The festival also acted as a springboard for rising talent with both The Blackout and Bring Me the Horizon nominated as Best British Newcomer at the Kerrang Awards in the wake of their Full Ponty performances.
There was also a Full Ponty Fringe Festival going on in the venues of Pontypridd town centre. Some of the highlights included Mike Peters and rising star Gethin Pearson playing the intimate surroundings of Clwb Y Bont, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain stealing the show at the Muni Arts Centre and the Dirty Sanchez boys running amuck at Kudos night club.
Radio 1 presenter Huw Stephens was at the event presenting coverage of the Full Ponty for BBC Wales and was impressed with what he saw
"It's a brilliant opportunity to present big Welsh bands as well as biggish Welsh bands to a big Welsh audience. Events like this that happen outside Cardiff are really important, and Ponty has got a big musical heritage of its own. There are always gigs happening around the town at venues like the Muni and the University, and hopefully that will carry on."
The Full Ponty promises to be even bigger and better next year, so keep your eyes open and your ears to the ground for news on who will be rocking Pontypridd in 2007!
Big Anthem Fawr
The Pop Factory also hosted The Big Anthem Fawr Concert on the Bank holiday following The Full Ponty. This special event was a celebration of a significant date in Welsh history, the 150th anniversary of the Welsh national anthem. Open to all and free to attend, this gala concert rounded off The Full Ponty festival with a host of Welsh and International guests such as Max Boyce, Hayley Westernra and Aled Jones, all gathered in one place in celebration of ‘Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’, which was originally composed in Pontypridd in 1856.
As well as being a stunning gala concert in its own right, Big Anthem Fawr was the flagship event in a series of celebrations planned throughout the year to mark the 150th anniversary of the National Anthem. The concert was filmed by Avanti Television for the BBC, and was broadcast on television around the world.
